Rise of the Ronin: Everything You Need To Know

Rise of the Ronin is a new upcoming RPG developed by Team Ninja and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game is going to be released on March 22 and it’s going to be exclusive on PS5. Development for the game started in 2015 and I’m looking forward to seeing what they did in 9 years since. 

In this article, I’ll be going through everything we know about the game and everything that has been revealed to us so far. And after we go through everything you’ll have a clearer picture if this game is worth your hard-earned money and your precious time.

Rise of the Ronin story is set in Edo (Tokyo), in the late 19th century, but you’ll also be able to explore other places like Yokohama, Kyoto, as well as areas in the countryside. The game portrays Japan’s Civil War between the Tokugawa Shogunate and various anti-shogunate factions displeased with the Western influence.

Gameplay

The first thing worth mentioning is the character creation. You’ll be able to create and customize your own character. 

This leads me to believe that there isn’t a main hero per se but more of that character you create plays a part in the story. Which is kinda cool, makes you more part of the game.

The next thing that you might notice is the range of weapons that are available to us. From the obvious ones like katana, we can also see there are guns, rifles, and even flamethrowers. There are going to be even more weapons, which we will need to discover for ourselves. 

But when it comes to fighting enemies, besides the usual block and parry, choosing a combat stance based on your enemy’s weapons will play a big role in defeating them.

When it comes to getting around, I’ve seen a couple of things that caught my eye. You’ll get an old and trusty steed to get around. The cooler thing that will be at your disposal is a Grappling Rope. 

Climbing high places and various rooftops will be a piece of cake. And the ultimate thing for traversing around is going to be “Avicula”. Some sort of glider, and just from the couple of moments they’ve shown us with it, I know for sure I’ll be abusing it as much as possible.

Also, it’s worth mentioning you’ll be given a choice in some key moments of the game to make decisions that will affect the course of the game. That means you can play the game multiple times and still have a different experience. A nice addition to the Pro’s column.

Graphics

When it comes to the looks of the game, it’s safe to say that graphics are definitely not in the “WOW” department. My hopes are that the gameplay video wasn’t the best representation of how it actually looks. Or that they compensate for it with awesome stories, battles, and etc. If you are a “High graphics” person and this puts you in an unsure state, I suggest waiting a bit and seeing my full review of the game, in which I’ll include actual looks of the game.

My thoughts 

I’ve seen many people on the web comparing it to the Ghost of Tsushima (read my thoughts on it here), Sekiro, and Nioh which is a positive thing in my book. It doesn’t need to compete with those names to be better but if it comes even close to being like them, I’ll for sure be having fun with it.
