Dragon Ball Legends Review: Is It a Good Mobile Game?
Dragon Ball Legends is a mobile game that was released back in May 2018 by Bandai Namco. With 50+ million downloads, the game is definitely a success but does it mean it’s a good game?
Well, I tried it and we are going to talk about my experience now. The game features action RPG gameplay based on the widely popular anime Dragon Ball. As a kid, I remember rushing home to watch one “new” episode of Goku, such happy times.
I was such a huge fan, I watched it daily for years. As I grew older and busier with life and other interests, my love and appreciation for Dragon Ball unfortunately diminished. On some lucky occasions when I stumbled on a random episode on TV or snippets of epic scenes on YouTube, I had to watch it. Maybe one of these days I’ll find enough time to watch it properly from start to end. But for now, playing a Dragon Ball game should suffice.
The game’s main protagonist is an amnesiac Saiyan by the name of Shallot. Shallot is an ancient Saiyan from the past who woke up to find himself a participant in the Tournament of Time. You have to assemble a team of fighters to use in fights. You can do that by summoning. Once acquired they need to be leveled and boosted.
Overall Appeal
When it comes to the look of the game, I would put it somewhere in the mid-tier. Not that I have anything in particular against it but it can be polished a little bit more.
I’m fully aware it’s a card-type of the game but it doesn’t mean it can’t be nice looking. I would make fighting animations a little bit smoother. And also added some kind of animations to the shiny cards, just to make it even more awesome looking. So I’m giving it 6/10.
Playability
In the time I played Dragon Ball Legends, it’s safe to say that I didn’t lack things to do. We should take into consideration that I’m a fairly new player and for that reason, I have more content to do.
As a casual player, I’m still going through the campaign and there are plenty of events to be done. PVP seems very active and competitive. I tried my luck fighting other players but it’s safe to say there is still a lot to learn. So for the playability part, I’m giving it 8/10.
Is it Free to Play Friendly?
It’s difficult to say, really.
So far into the game, I don’t feel much pressure to spend any money. They didn’t try pushing with a bunch of shiny packs that would “help” me. They gave me enough resources to play and they also gave me plenty of stuff for summoning.
Now with that said, I also think this is a gacha game, and when it comes to competing with players who spend, it’s close to impossible. Yeah, knowing game mechanics and being smart about your summons and with a little bit of luck, could help you reach the top ranks. But to compete with whales who know what they are doing? Good luck there. And for those reasons, I’m giving it 7/10.
Tips
Take things slowly, and don’t invest too much resources into summoning and making a bunch of heroes powerful. Learn about game mechanics, learn more about heroes and what is “meta”. When you do that you can focus more on building the right team and summoning of selective banners, not on all.
Final Thoughts
Dragon Ball Legends is for sure a fun game to play casually. I am having fun playing it. Now when we take our score and score from the Play Store we get the final score of 7.5/10. Which isn’t completely bad for mobile. But our journey doesn’t end here, we soldier on. Check out my other mobile game reviews.
